Tony Gilroy Directing the Next Sequel in the Bourne Franchise« FirstShowing.net

Tony Gilroy

We heard back in June that franchise screenwriterTony Gilroywould return toscript another installmentof the Jason Bourne franchise despite the fact that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrassdecided to step awayfrom the series. NowDeadlinereports Gilroy is also stepping up to direct the sequel, tentatively titled,The Bourne Legacy. As someone who's a bit leery about another sequel in the franchise after the story felt like it came to a logical conclusion, Gilroy's writing was certainly a plus, but I'm not sure his directing really improves the chances of this project living up to franchise standards, especially if Damon doesn't return.

Damon has already said he wouldn't return to play Jason Bourne if Greengrass didn't come back as well, but with one of the staples of the franchise involved, there's a chance he could change his mind. However, Gilroy's success as a director is about 50/50 since his 2007 directorial debutMichael Claytonwas followed up with the wholly boring and disappointingDuplicity, so I'm not so sure it's the best idea.

Apparently whether or not Damon decides to return, Universal plans to move forward with the project, even if that means replacing him. That doesn't sound like the best idea since Damon is an integral part of the franchise, and we all know Universal hasn't had the best luck at the box office lately. It's unclear how soon the project might get off the ground, but it's definitely a priority for the studio. We'll keep you posted as more information becomes available.Would you see a Jason Bourne film without Matt Damon?
